Tolix A Chair

Friday is here and another design classic is in the house!

We've all seen it I'm sure - Tolix A chairs are almost impossible to get away from, 2 pages in to any design magazine and you will spot at least one. This chair is the very epitome of French cafe life, conjuring up images of fabulously dressed women casually smoking and sipping espresso in Paris. And it's this unfailing popularity that has landed it in the collections of the Vitra Design Museum, MOMA and the Pompidou Center to name but a few.

In 1907, Frenchman Xavier Pauchard pioneered galvanization, protecting sheet metal from rust by dipping it into molten zinc. Shortly after World War 1, based in Autun, Burgundy, he began manufacturing galvanized sheet-metal domestic items and in 1927 registered the trademark TOLIX. By the conclusion of the 1950’s Tolix produced about 60,000 units annually. This prosperous company remained in the same family until 2004. In recent years Tolix has be revived by Chantal Andriot who has helped in perpetuating the dual standards of quality and innovation to an industry skilled in the making of functional furniture.
